The Fund for Alternative Journalism supports the future of local media by investing in community-based, public-interest journalism and investigative reporting. We are focused on alternative-weekly media outlets that have made us laugh, made us think, and connected us to arts, culture, politics, and civic life for decades. You can sign-up here for our quarterly newsletter, and you can make a contribution to support our work here. We hope you will join us.The Fund is fiscally sponsored by Panorama Global, an independent, 501(c)(3) organization that partners with leading social-impact organizations to accept charitable contributions on their behalf. As the Fund begins our work, we are initially supporting two leading alternative-weeklies, the Seattle-based Stranger and Portland-based Mercury. We plan to grow our work beyond these publications.
FAQs
1. Why local media? In the current climate, where disinformation and polarization are widespread, protecting and investing in independent journalism is essential to keeping us informed, supporting democracy, and fostering vibrant communities. Don't take our word for it—here are the facts. Local journalism:Boosts Civic Engagement: Research shows that in areas with robust local journalism, voter turnout increases significantly and residents are more informed about local issues and candidates. Both changes foster greater accountability in local government.Fights Misinformation: Community-based journalism serves as a crucial counterweight to misinformation, which has become more prevalent in today’s media landscape. According to the Knight Foundation, Americans have more confidence in local news outlets to fulfill various civic duties in their community than in their neighbors, social media, or community apps and organizations. These are highly trusted brands.Saves money: According to the director of the Stanford Journalism Program, each dollar spent on investigative journalism generates hundreds of dollars in benefits to society in the form of government cost savings, protective changes in legislation, or public health risks avertedProtects Democracy: The Brookings Institution has reported that the closure of local newspapers leads to less oversight of local governments, resulting in increased corruption and a less engaged electorate. A UNC study also found that more than 2,100 local newspapers have closed in the U.S. since 2004, leaving many communities as “news deserts.”Builds Community Cohesion: Local journalism fosters a sense of community by keeping residents informed about issues that affect their daily lives. It enhances social cohesion by reporting on local events, culture, and public interest stories that national outlets often overlook.Plays a Watchdog Role: Independent journalism plays a critical watchdog role, exposing corruption and holding those in power accountable. Investigative reporting at the local level has led to significant reforms and policy changes, ensuring transparency in local governments and institutions.2. What will my contributions be used to support?Contributions to the Fund may be used only for permissible, charitable purposes, and the Fund currently uses them exclusively to advance local, public-interest journalism and investigative reporting. Initially, this support is focused on The Stranger and The Portland Mercury. For example, contributions may be used to allow our journalists to do educational and investigative work on transportation and urban planning, youth and education, and arts and culture. We are excited to share the results of your support with quarterly updates and an annual report.3. How can I donate to the Fund? The Fund accepts contributions through Panorama Global. Contributions may be made by credit/debit card, ACH, wire transfer, or stock.4. What role exactly does Panorama Global play in all this?Panorama is an outside sponsor that can assure proper use of charitable donations while saving the Fund the expense and administrative burden of creating and managing a new 501(c)(3) entity.5. How will I get the information I need to take a tax deduction for my contribution? When you make your contribution, you will receive an email thanking you and providing the relevant 501(c)(3)’s EIN.
